All About Vanessa Madrid

This page is to tell more about the accomplishments of this promising young student.  Many scholarships require 2-3 letters of recommendation with the application.  Since students usually apply for several scholarships and can only use one or two of them.  a scanned version of all of the originals is posted here.  The letters are divided by political, school, leadership and community service.


Political

Barbara Boxer is a US senator representing California.  She not only sent a very nice letter of thanks for Vanessa's dedication, but also called her father to presonally thank the family for supporting such a successful student.

Latino Leadership Conference

Vanessa Madrid is shown giving a seminar to about 80 Latino parents about how thier students can be successful in school and life.

Leadership and Community Service

Vanessa Madrid volunteered to organize Galt High School students to work with the Sacramento County Election board in collecting the preciinct votes as they are brought to election headquarters.  The students all reported enjoying being a part of the election process.

This shows Vanessa directing the Galt High Students that worked on the February 5th primary election.  She found more than 30 and used 20 students to assist in the pre-election setup for the polling booths and the collection of ballots as precincts brought them in.  Her job was to arrange travel to and from, place the workers, collect time-sheets, etc.  This project earned over $1200 for High School Clubs and charities.   Click here to read the thank you letters for this project.


California Youth Council

Sacramento County Youth Council and FNL

Joelle Orrock is the coordinator for Friday Night Live in Sacramento County.  FNL is a teen group for alcohol prevention.

Galt High School district board certificate for her work with FNL,  Vanessa is the current president.


As an active member of the all volunteer group, I Love Galt, Vanessa assisted with a fund raiser for the Galt Area Historical Society at Halloween 2007.

Vanessa was in charge of the duck pond booth at the Autumn Fest at the Rae House Museum of the Galt Area Historical Society.

John Moran Community Service Scholarship for 2008

From l. to r. Bianca Ochoa, the first winner of this scholarship.  She is attending the University of the Pacific in Stockton.  Barbara Payne, city council person.  Jasmin Posas, president of the Galt Youth Committee, presented the awards.  Kristin Madsen, Christopher Ortega and Vanessa Madrid on the far right.  Liz was unable to attend due to work.

The 2008 winners are Vanessa Madrid, Liz Tokunaga, Christopher Ortega, and Kristin Madsen.  Vanessa was awarded $1200 and the rest were awarded $600 each.


Full ride scholarship for Cottey College

Vanessa has been awarded scholarships from Cottey College that will cover her tuition and room and board.  She received her largest award, $16,000, from the California chapter of PEO.  Now she is applying for and hoping to receive additional scholarships to help pay for books and other costs estimated to be about $4000 per year.
