Oktoberfest 2006
By Francie Spinelli and Duane Ausherman
This year's Oktoberfest was organized by De Carson of Carson's
Coatings. The proceeds went to the Boys and Girls Club. His crew did a superb job of it. Quite a few vendors were
on hand to display/sell products. The weather was a bit on the cool side,
but overall it was OK. A lot of interesting activities were available for
kids and older kids alike. For a traditional "beer drinking" event, a lot
of families were out on the blocked off "C" street.

For the third year the Galt Oktoberfest has been treated with music by the Erv
Boschee Band and dance performances by the Al Pentanzer (Alpine) Schuplatter
(shoes platter, or type of shoes) Dancers. Audience participation is
always encouraged.

Two dancers, Clydene Rodgers and Eric Humenick, pause for a coffee and kuchen
break.

Soccer was played all day long next to the railroad tracks. This game is
between the Cheetahs and Black Dragons.

Deerbin Produce (209-745-2223) had wonderful samples of a few types of pears and
they were just perfect. This is Patricia Gonzalez and 3 year old Desiree.

Cheyenne (8) is getting her very first (temporary) tattoo.

Greggory (6) is very proud of his tattoo.

De Carson is getting a back rub..................

Three year old CJ is a Tinkerbell fireman.....firewoman?..... firegirl?

l. to r. Vickie Maerzolf, Miranda Cleming (10) and Angie Martin are showing off
their costumes found during a recent trip to Germany. Aren't they lovely?

It was not quite clear just exactly what was going on here. l. to r. Cindy
Harrison, someone who claimed to be "X" (I think it is some politician),
Tom Malson
(candidate for something) and Kristin McDonnell. Money and raffle tickets
can be seen. What was clear is that they were all having fun.

Galt Community Services gathered in the Galt Fire House for the third Annual
Galt Oktoberfest. Their mission is to educate the visitors of the services they
provide for Public Safety and to recruit volunteers. Galt Fire Department
demonstrated the correct way to use a fire extinguisher. Christopher Rohl, 11,
was the first volunteer. He used the acronym “PASS” to remember the steps to
follow when using an extinguisher: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

Galt Police Department’s Mounted Unit Craig and Linda Walton provide public
safety and education at special events i.e. the Strawberry Festival and
Oktoberfest, and participate in search rescues. To qualify, the horses must
first have the right personality, and then spend 80 hours in training before
they can go on the street. From L to R, are working teams, Linda Walton riding
“Qutza” and Craig Walton’s on “Jessie”. They went through 100 horses before
finding “Jesse.” The Unit has two other teams in training.

Martina Muller, 5 year old, dances with her daddy, Barti Muller. They moved here
from Switzerland five years ago. Martina is wearing the red dress sent by her
Swiss-Grandmother.

Mayor Darryl Clare, Past-President of the Galt Sunrise Rotary Club, mans the
popcorn machine with (L to R) Winona Casity, current President, Al Luna, and his
wife, seated, Jeanette Luna. They want to remind Galt of an upcoming celebration
“The Gathering” where seven local area churches will participate in a joint
service at the Galt High School Gymnasium on October 8, 2006, at 10:00 a.m.
Agatha Molise and Mamhau Mokoena from Lesotho Africa will be the keynote
speakers.

Draft horses pulling a beer wagon was a common site in the early Oktoberfest
celebrations. With the use of modern machinery, the draft horse was no longer
cost effective. They were either sent to slaughter houses or “put out to
pasture.” Today the Draft Horse breeds have dwindled. In the “line up” of breeds
from L to R, “Tom” a rare-breed, Suffolk, only 3,000 remain in the world. “Hank”
an 8-year old English Shire Bay (Bay is when the body is dark brown with black
mane and tail), and two English Shires from Morgan Hill.

After a fun-packed day, “Sierra” and her daddy catch 30 winks.

One of several Volkswagen Auto Clubs attending today’s Oktoberfest is the Kafer
Knights from Sacramento. Kafer is German for “Beetle”.
