Screening Mammography Services now available in Galt

By Duane Ausherman

St. Joseph's Medical Center (Stockton) Mobile Mammography Program exhibited at the recent Health Faire in Galt.  The first date that the van will work in Galt is the 16th of June, 2007 from 9 AM to 3 PM.  Free and low-cost services available to those who qualify.  Accept insurances as well.  Call 1-866-430-8222 to schedule an appointment.  Hablamos Espaņol!

Results of the first day in Galt

The day started with the van having to park where the trees blocked the upload link for data transmission.  This will be corrected for the next exam day, probably in August.  The number of pre-registered women was 17 and only 14 showed up for the exams.  The required minimum is 18, but this is the first time in Galt.  We can do better next time.  All Galt residents are invited to inform friends of this health service.

This unit is only a year old and cost $1.5 million. It travels to many locations to perform these women's services.

The Mobile Mammography Unit at Save Mart, June 16th.  l. to r.  GHS students Elizabeth Martin (senior), Eduwiges Iniguez (junior) and Anayi Iniguez (senior) were on hand to help out.  Not shown is Sarah Paepke who just graduated from GHS and expects to be a physician.

A registered patient first checks in with Olga to make sure that all of the papers are properly filled out.

Olga is the first stop once inside the Mobile Van.  She checks the pre-registered patient's paper work.  Then the patient goes to the oral interview for completing the history.

This is the exam table for the breast, pelvic exam and pap smear if appropriate.

This small room is for the first exam.  The patient is checked for any lumps in a breast.  Some get a pelvic exam and pap smear too.  If the patient is found to have no lumps, then on to the mammogram.  If lumps are found, then the patient is referred to another office for a more complete exam.  Insurance is not required.

This is the x-ray machine for mammography. It is the state of the art for this type of diagnostic exam.

Our student helpers (left) are getting an explanation of the machine from Pam Stolley (right) the Imaging Coordinator.

In actual practice the breast is squeezed between these plates for the x-ray. This is the first time such services have been in Galt.

GHS senior Anayi Iniguez is experiencing the mammography machine with her fist.  The image Coordinator is Pamela Stolley on the right side.

Registering women at the Library entrance to the Galt Market on Tuesday, 11th of June.

The woman in the middle is getting information about how to get a free mammogram. The St. Joseph's out-reacher workers are set up at the Galt Library entrance to the Galt Market.

Out-reach workers from St. Joseph's Mobile Mammography Van project register women for exams.

This mother of two is learning about free women's services in Galt from Celeste Munoz.

Celeste Munoz (15) is a sophomore at Galt High School and she is handing out flyers to women at a gate at the Galt Market.

This Galt High graduate, Sarah Paepke. is explaining the services offered at Save Mart on the 16th of June.

Sarah Paepke just graduated from GHS and intends to be a physician.

Lizette Munoz is handing out flyers to women at the Galt Market entrance.

Lizette Munoz is a senior at GHS and is a frequent community service worker at a variety of events.

Come back soon to see photos of this project and the wonderful volunteers.
