23 December, 2006 bake sale at Save Mart

By Duane Ausherman

Here are Bianca Ochoa, Kristin Madsen and Kathryn Salfen selling baked goods for the John Moran Community Service Scholarship fundraiser.

(l. to r.) Bianca Ochoa, Kristin Madsen and Kathryn Salfen at the west table at Save Mart.  Bianca was the winner of the very first John Moran scholarship in 2005.  Kristin was quite tenacious in selling.  She developed a new technique for approaching the potential buyer and it really worked.  At 3 PM, the planned closing of the sale, we still had a few items unsold.  These super sellers had the choice of closing down and splitting up the remaining items for their families, or to continue.  They chose to "sell out" and they did.  Within 20 minutes they had dropped prices a bit and cleared out everything, even the last couple of bags of prepared samples.  Not shown in this photo is Kayla Neilsen, another successful and aggressive seller.

This is the East table of baked goods.

This is just some of the baked goods for the John Moran Community Service Scholarship fundraiser at Save Mart in Galt.

The shows some of the variety, but not nearly the quantity of delicious goods made for the sale.  At the top of the photo is a couch that is covered with pies.  The end table is holding a few too.  Stacked in another part of the office are another 15 dozen cookies and other items.  This does not include the large amount that was to be delivered on the day of the sale.  Galt is so lucky to have so many willing volunteers.

This lovely cake was baked and decorated by Kayla Nielsen's 14 year old sister.

This lovely hand decorated cake was done by 14 year old Kirsten Neilsen.  She deserves three gold stars.

This star is for doing community service at such a young age.               This star is for beautiful decorating on this cake for the John Moran Scholarship fundraiser.              This star is for raising Kayla so well.

The results

The John Moran Scholarship fund only needed $850 to fulfill the three awards.  Our goal was to earn a profit of $1000.  The weather was cool, but otherwise perfect.  Being only two days before Christmas, the store was very busy and we had a super supply of people walking by.  The tables had plenty of baked goods to offer.  The Galt High School students were great helpers and enough were available to make this a success.  People were very generous in donations for this worthwhile effort.

$1234.05 profit
