Staff Writer - It was a big night up at the state capital
Jan. 23, when the California Friday Night Live System recognized those
that have made significant contributions in support of positive youth
development and well being of young people in our state.
Galt High School senior Vanessa Madrid, 17, was the only youth honored
along with many other adults, including First Lady Maria Shriver,
Assemblyman John Laird, Senator Dean Florez, Assemblyman Bill Maze,
Congressman Devin Nunes, and Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell.
“It is an honor to be in the same category as assemblymen and senators
who are making a difference in the world,” said Madrid.
FNL advisor Laurie Bambas said Madrid was an asset to GHS who earned
this award.
“Miss Madrid is an exceptional young woman who, through her involvement
in the Friday Night Live Program, has become a tireless advocate for the
prevention of underage drinking in our community and statewide,” said
Bambas. “Her caring attitude is exemplified through her commitment and
dedication to the issues she takes on, her family and her peers.”
At the local level, Madrid is the president of the FNL chapter at Galt
High school and has served as a mentor to a middle school student for
the past two years. At the county level, she serves on FNL County Youth
Council, is a member of the youth led evaluation team, and is applying
for membership to the Sacramento County Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board.
At the state level, she serves on the California Youth Council,
traveling around the state and nation representing the youth of
California, educating communities and informing policymakers.
Madrid’s efforts to advocate the board of equalization to re-tax
flavored malt beverages, or Alcopops, did not go unnoticed and
contributed to its success.
Madrid is very excited about her award.
“This award is super meaningful to me because I realize that all my
hours of hard work are being recognized, although I don’t do it with the
intent of being recognized,” said Madrid. “I do it with the intent of
making a change and creating a healthier environment for our community.”
